hiking san juan islands Cypress IslandCypress Island is the largest and least developed of the San Juan Islands. Ninety percent of the island is forested and managed by the Department of Natural Resources.

We’ll explore the northern end of the island hiking through coastal rainforest, maple groves, lakes, wetlands and beaches on its very well-maintained trail system: 5-7 mi, easy to moderate, 700 ft elevation gain.

Pick a spot on the beach and enjoy your picnic lunch with stunning vistas of the San Juan Islands, the Salish Sea, Mount Baker and the North Cascades.

Our chartered boat is spacious and comfortable.  The boat ride in itself is half the fun and sometimes includes stops to other islands not serviced by the ferry system.

Vendovi Island Preserve is the little “Hidden Jem” of the San Juan Islands.  Its 217 acres have been protected since 2010 by the San Juan Preservation Trust. It is located between Lummi, Cypress and Guemes Islands..

We’ll explore the island’s forest, beaches, grassy meadows and lookouts on its very well-maintained trail system (easy, 3 mi, 200 ft elevation gain) with our expert local guide Stephanie, who will talk about the history and habitats of the island, as well as identify the flora and fauna encountered.

May-July is the best time to see the Pigeon Guillemot (a seabird with red feet and mouth) and Purple Martins (the largest of the swallows) nesting on the island.

You’ll also get a chance to meet Elaina and TJ (the island caretakers) and learn why they love living on Vendovi.
