SKAGIT VALLEY CUSTOM FARM TOUR with visiting West Virginia Organic Farmer
The Skagit Valley Custom Farm Tour was designed by Cheryl herself. She added this Adventure to a weekend stay in Anacortes. And this is how it went.
We headed out to Mount Vernon and meandered thru Skagit Valley’s farmlands and historical barns. Being a small organic home farmer, she delighted in seeing the extent of Skagit Valley’s farmlands. We saw corn fields, potato fields, squash fields, strawberry fields, raspberry fields, and many fields with happy cows grazing!
Then drove along the very scenic Chuckanut Drive to get ourselves to the oyster farm. Yeap, an oyster farm. Ever been to an oyster farm? Cheryl hadn’t. The setting was amazing, on the edge of Samish Bay, as was the operation itself. Justin kindly explained the entire process to us and it was fascinating. Joe (working behind the counter) gave us the history of the oyster farm. Did you know that three different species of oysters are grown & harvested here? Plus geoducks and clams! Lots of people came to buy and eat their shellfish right on the property. I bet it all tasted better right there and then!
Next, we drove to the blueberry farm. Unbeknownst to Cheryl, blueberries grow well alongside giant sunflowers. We marveled at the giant flowers as we picked (and savored) the big blueberries.
This blueberry farm is extremely popular in the summer; people come from far and near to pick as many blueberries as possible. It was fun to watch families & groups of friends have blueberry-picking competitions. Strawberries are also grown here. In the small shop, all kinds of blueberry products were available for purchase. They all looked delicious but we only took our hand-picked blueberries.
Down the street, we stopped at an organic dairy to sample their cheeses. You bet we tried them all! Cheryl and I bought our favorite ones. But as you know, cheese goes great with bread. Guess where we stopped next? You guessed, the Breadfarm. Ever been to a breadfarm? In this particular one, they make the best artisanal bread in all of NW Washington! We sure savored our bread & cheese for lunch!
Cheryl opted for the Extended Skagit Valley Custom Farm Tour. She wanted see Deception Pass Bridge, the #1 attraction in NW Washington and one of the most visited bridges in the world! “This is amazing” she said, as we walked out on it, looking down from it. The current was ripping through the narrow passage between Fidalgo and Whidbey Islands. To surprise her, I took her down to the beach so she could look up at the magnificent bridge. We were both surprised by a couple of seals seemingly playing in the current.
To end the day, we drove up to Mt Eerie (Fidalgo Island’s highest point) where we got amazing views of the Salish Sea Islands, the North Cascades and Olympic mountains, and of course Skagit Valley!
