This 4-hour cruise crosses the open waters of Fidalgo, Lopez, and Whidbey Islands during puffin nesting season on Smith Island — your best chance all year to spot these striking seabirds up close. Beyond the puffins, keep an eye out for other alcids, seabirds, shorebirds, and raptors. Marine mammals sometimes make an appearance.![]()

Mother Nature gifted us a beautiful day in the San Juan Islands for our Birding Cruise to Vendovi Island.![]()
We were glad to spot all three alcids we'd hoped for — Marbled Murrelets, Rhinoceros Auklets, and Pigeon Guillemots — along with the regulars: gulls, cormorants, eagles, and oystercatchers. Seals were out in good numbers too, resting on the rocky islands.![]()
Once ashore, we enjoyed plenty of forest birds, both seen and heard, while exploring the island.![]()
We also had some extra reasons to celebrate — among our group was a couple celebrating their recent proposal, and Mary celebrated her birthday too!
