Cutting off Tulip Flowers by Hand – Skagit Valley Tulip Tour
Cutting off tulip flowers by hand is an amazing process to witness! Can you count how many tulips this worker clips off in the duration of the video? I think his name is Speedy Gonzalez!
Tulips fields in Skagit Valley, Washington are “topped off” (flowers are broken off) when the tulips have “bloomed out” or have fully opened up. The reason for doing this is to prevent the petals from falling into the plant itself setting the stage for a fungal disease referred to as “fire”. It causes leaves to become full of brown spots, withered, twisted and distorted. And yes, it does spread like fire, spreading rapidly and rotting entire fields of tulips.
