Sauk Mountain June Wildflower Hiking Tour – North Cascades, Washington
This Sauk Mountain June Wildflower Hiking tour is ideal for the wildflower enthusiast! Skagit Guided Adventures offers small group Wildflower Tours & Hikes in the North Cascades to “Re-Wild” the Spirit! Sauk Mountain is nestled in the Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, in the heart of the North Cascades. The switchback trail is about 5 mi long and gains about 2000 ft.
Sauk Mountain Wildflower Hiking Tour takes you to one of the most amazing displays of wild colors in NW Washington! Wildflowers make their debut in this sub-alpine meadow around June and continue into their procession of color thru September. So come see them painting the mountain side during this time of the year!
On June 20, Skagit Guided Adventures welcomed Summer on Sauk Mountain. But first, we were road-blocked by a mama Grouse and her six cheepers as we drove up the forest service road. She (and us) patiently waited until all the chicks had crossed the road.
As soon as we set foot on the trail, we were delighted by all shades of reds, oranges, yellows, greens, whites, pinks, purples, and combinations of all of these! Sitka valerians, paintbrushes, asters, penstemos, arnicas, louseworts, cow parsnips, thistles, meadowrues abounded in the hillside meadow.
A bit higher, on more rocky habitat, we found phlox, chickweeds, saxifrages, wild strawberries, bistorts, cinquefoils and mountain box to name a few. And, on the highest north-facing top of Sauk Mountain, where snow was still melting, we found mountain heathers, blueberries, and glacier lilies! We got to see the actual glacier lily growing thru the snow, melting it away with its own heat, as it was coming back to life! Lupines and violets accompanied us along the entire length of the trail!
Three continued another half mile to conquer to hogtop summit while us ladies waited below. We got a treat! A marrmot appeared, went about its business feeding, as we sat and watched quietly.
All in all, this Sauk Mountain June Wildflower Hiking Tour gave us 50 different flowers (we actually wrote them all down and counted), unexpected wildlife sightings, and amazing 360 views of Skagit and Sauk Valleys below, Mount Baker, Glacier Peak and the North Cascades skyline.
